Mahjong is a loud, sliding game. Tiles are pushed, shuffled and racked on every turn, so the surface you play on matters more than most people expect. A bare wooden or glass table is noisy and slippery, and it can scratch. Players usually solve this with one of three things: a mahjong mat, a fitted table cover or a tablecloth, or a table topper. This guide explains the difference, what size you need and which option suits the way you play.
For most home games, a mahjong mat is the easiest choice: it quiets the tiles, stops them sliding and rolls up when you are done. Choose a fitted table cover if you play on the same card table every week and want the cover to stay on. Choose a table topper only if your table is too small or the wrong shape for four racks.
Option | What it is | Best for |
Mahjong mat | A cushioned square, usually rubber or neoprene with a fabric top, laid on any table | Quiet play on any table, easy to store and carry |
Table cover | A fitted fabric cover, often with elastic corners, made for a square card table | A dedicated game table that stays set up |
Tablecloth | A loose cloth, sometimes printed with a mahjong theme | Decoration and light protection; least grip and sound control |
Table topper | A rigid square board placed on top of a table | Turning a small or round table into a square playing surface |
Four players need room for four racks, the wall and a discard area in the middle. A square table of about 34 to 36 inches per side works well; a standard folding card table is roughly that size. Smaller tables get crowded once the racks are out, and round tables leave the corners of the racks hanging. If you only have a small or round table, a square topper or a mat that sits flat in the center helps.
Size. A mat around 31 to 32 inches square fits inside a standard card table and leaves the edges free for drinks and cards.
Material. Rubber and neoprene mats grip the table and absorb noise. A fabric top lets tiles glide when you shuffle.
Thickness. A couple of millimeters is enough to quiet the tiles without making the surface spongy.
Edges. Stitched edges stop fraying and keep the mat lying flat.
Storage. A mat that rolls up stores in a closet or a tote with the rest of your set.
We cover sizes and materials in more detail in how to choose a mahjong mat.
If your group meets at the same card table every week, a fitted cover can stay on the table between games. Look for a cover made for the exact size of your table, with a padded or felt layer underneath so it softens the sound. A loose tablecloth looks nice but slides, wrinkles under the tiles and does little to quiet the game, so most players put a mat on top of it.
A topper is a rigid square board that sits on an existing table. It is useful when your table is round, too small or uneven. Toppers are bulky to store, so they suit a home with a dedicated game space more than players who travel to different houses. You can still put a mat on top for sound and grip.
Our mats are 31.5 inches square, so they fit a standard four-player card table. The Regal mat is natural rubber and rolls up for storage:

Wipe the table so the mat lies flat and does not pick up crumbs.
Center the mat so each player has the same reach to the wall.
Place the four racks along the edges of the mat. See mahjong racks with pushers for rack sizes.
Keep drinks and snacks on the table edge or a side table, off the mat.
Do you need a mat to play mahjong?
No, but it helps. A mat quiets the tiles, stops them sliding and protects the table from scratches.
What size is a mahjong table?
About 34 to 36 inches square works well for four players, which is close to a standard folding card table.
Is a tablecloth good enough?
A loose tablecloth slides and does little to quiet the tiles. Most players use a mat, or a mat on top of the cloth.
What is the difference between a mahjong mat and a table cover?
A mat is a cushioned square you lay on any table and roll up after. A table cover is fitted to one table size and usually stays on.
What size mahjong mat fits a card table?
A mat around 31 to 32 inches square fits a standard card table. Ours are 31.5 inches.
