Mahjong Racks with Pushers: What They Do and How to Choose

Last updated: October 2026

Racks are the piece of an American Mahjong set that players handle most, yet they are often an afterthought when buying a set. A good set of racks keeps your hand hidden, holds your wall neatly and, with a pusher, moves the wall to the center of the table so nobody has to stretch. This guide explains what racks and pushers do and what to check before you buy a set of four.

Quick answer

You need four racks, one per player. Choose racks with pushers: they make building and passing the wall much easier. Check that a wall of 19 tiles fits along the rack (rack lengths vary, so measure your tiles first), pick a material you like (acrylic is light and easy to clean, wood feels classic), and match the color to your tiles and mat.

What a mahjong rack does

A rack is a long, angled tray that sits in front of each player. Your tiles stand on the top ledge facing you, so the other players cannot see your hand. In American Mahjong, East holds 14 tiles and everyone else holds 13 during the deal, and the rack keeps them upright and easy to rearrange while you work toward a hand on the card.

Your section of the wall, 19 tiles long and 2 tiles high, is built in front of your rack at the start of each game.

What the pusher does

A pusher is a long arm or bar attached to the front of the rack. When it is your turn to deal from your wall, you use it to slide the whole wall toward the center of the table in one move, so the other players can reach it without knocking tiles over.

  • Lift-off magnetic pushers attach to the rack with magnets. They come off cleanly for storage and pack flat.

  • Fixed or hinged pushers stay attached to the rack. They cannot get lost, but the rack takes a little more room in a bag.

Racks without pushers still work, but most American Mahjong groups now play with pushers because they keep the wall straight and speed up every game.

How to choose mahjong racks: 5 things to check

1. Length: will your wall fit?

Each wall is 19 tiles long, so the rack and pusher need to be at least as long as 19 of your tiles placed side by side. Tile sizes vary from set to set, and so do rack lengths, so the easiest check is to line up 19 tiles from your set, measure them, and compare that with the length of the rack and pusher. A wall can overhang the ends a little, but a rack close to your wall length is easiest to use. If your tiles are on the larger side, or you like extra room at the ends, choose a longer rack.

2. Material: acrylic or wood

  • Acrylic is light, smooth and wipes clean with a damp cloth. Clear and pearlescent finishes suit modern acrylic tile sets and colorful mats.

  • Wood feels warm and traditional and is heavier on the table. It suits classic Bakelite-style or wood-tone sets, but it needs more care to avoid scratches and moisture.

3. Pusher style

Decide whether you want pushers that lift off for storage or stay attached. If you travel to games often, lift-off pushers make the set easier to pack.

4. Color and style

Racks frame every tile on the table, so they shape how the whole set looks. Clear racks are neutral and work with any tile color or mat. Iridescent or colored racks add more personality and look best when they pick up a color from your tiles or mat.

5. Storage and travel

Four racks with pushers are long and fairly bulky. If you carry your set to friends' houses, plan for a bag with a rack sleeve, such as a travel bag set with a tile pouch and rack sleeve. At home, a clear window carrying case keeps the tiles organized.

Buying racks with a set

If you are buying your first set, it is often simpler to get the racks in the same order. Many of our American Mahjong sets offer a style option that adds a coordinating mat, or a mat plus four racks with pushers. On our best-selling Holiday Red set, the tiles alone are $289.99 and the tiles with mat and racks are $439.99, so the mat and four racks add $150.

Caring for acrylic racks

  • Wipe with a soft, damp cloth. Avoid harsh cleaners and rough sponges, which can cloud or scratch acrylic.

  • Store racks flat or in a sleeve so they do not rub against each other.

  • Keep magnetic pushers with their racks so they do not get separated.

  • Pair your racks with a mat to protect both the racks and the table. See how to choose a mahjong mat.

FAQ

Do I need racks with pushers for American Mahjong?
They are not required by the rules, but most players use them. The pusher moves the wall to the center of the table neatly, which makes the deal faster and keeps tiles from toppling.

How many racks do I need?
Four, one for each player. A standard American Mahjong game is played with four people.

How long should mahjong racks be?
Long enough to hold a wall of 19 tiles. Line up 19 of your tiles and measure them, then pick a rack close to that length. Longer racks give extra room for larger tiles.

Are acrylic or wooden racks better?
Neither is better for play. Acrylic is lighter and easier to clean; wood feels more traditional and is heavier on the table. Choose the one that suits your tiles.

What are Siamese mahjong racks?
Siamese (double) racks are extra-long racks made for Siamese Mahjong, a variation for two players. For a regular four-player game you need standard racks.
