A good American Mahjong set gets used every week for years, so it pays to choose carefully. This guide covers what a complete set must include, the details that separate a great set from an average one, and the sets we would put on the table this season, from a best-selling red Christmas set to a pink retro set that is not just for the holidays.
Best overall:Holiday Red Christmas Mahjong Set, larger engraved tiles plus a carry case
Classic Christmas look:Classic Santa Christmas Mahjong Set
Best gift for a sister or best friend:White Christmas Sisters Mahjong Set
Showpiece set:Christmas Glitter Mahjong Set
Not just for the holidays:Pink Retro Mahjong Set
American Mahjong is played with 152 tiles, including 8 Jokers. Most quality sets add 8 blank tiles as spares, for 160 tiles in total. Every set below follows this breakdown:
36 Dots, 36 Bams and 36 Craks (the three suits)
16 Winds and 12 Dragons
8 Flowers
8 Jokers
8 blank replacement tiles
Jokers are what make a set "American". A Chinese or Hong Kong set has no Jokers, so it cannot be used for American play without adding them. To play, you will also need the current year's card from the National Mah Jongg League, which publishes a new card every spring.
On engraved tiles, the suits and artwork are cut into the acrylic, so you can feel them and they hold up to years of shuffling. Printed tiles (usually UV printed) put the artwork on the surface. Printing allows crisp color at a lower price, while engraving is the more durable choice for a set you play every week.
Tile size changes how a set feels in the hand and on the rack. Our standard tiles measure about 1.22 × 0.91 × 0.51 in, while the Holiday Red tiles are larger at about 1.42 × 0.98 × 0.62 in. Bigger tiles are easier to read and pick up, which many players appreciate after a long game.
You need four racks, one per player. Racks with pushers let you slide your wall to the center of the table without reaching. Check the rack length too: most are around 17.5 to 20 in long.
A mahjong mat quiets the table, protects it from scratches and keeps tiles from sliding. A 31.5 × 31.5 in mat fits a standard four-player game. Many of our sets let you add a coordinating mat, or a mat plus four racks, as a style option.
If you play away from home, look for a carry case or plan on a travel bag. Of the sets below, Holiday Red comes with a carry case.
You will look at these tiles for hours at a time. Choose artwork, colors and Jokers that make you want to set up a game.
Our best seller. Crisp white faces sit on ruby red backs with a gold snowflake, and the engraved artwork covers ornaments, decorated trees, snow globes and festive florals, with Nutcracker Jokers. Its tiles are larger than our standard sets, and it includes a carry case. Add the coordinating mat, or the mat plus four 4-in-1 racks with pushers.
Holiday Red Christmas Mahjong Set $289.99 |
Dots become hanging ornaments, Bams become strings of holiday lights, Craks become numbered stockings and the Winds show Santa's sleigh. A red and green Nutcracker pair serves as Jokers. Every tile is engraved, and you can add a matching Classic Santa mat or the mat plus racks.
Classic Santa Christmas Mahjong Set $289.99 |
Inspired by the "Sisters" number in White Christmas (1954), with Jokers showing two performers in blue dresses holding feather fans. Ice blue snowflake backs, warm ivory faces and layered blue and navy edges make it one of the most elegant sets we carry. The coordinating 31.5 in mat continues the feather fan theme.
White Christmas Sisters Mahjong Set $289.99 |
Each translucent back holds a decorated Christmas tree surrounded by loose glitter, so a gentle shake turns every tile into a tiny snow globe. The faces are engraved, and the set comes in classic red or evergreen green. Choose the mat and red 4-in-1 racks for a complete holiday table.

If you want a pink mahjong set you can play all year, this is it. Sunglasses, lipstick, perfume bottles, handbags and retro convertibles fill the suits, set on ivory faces with pink and gold details and a faceted, crystal-look pink back. A full 160-tile American set with 8 Jokers.
$289.99 |
Start with a complete 160-tile set so you never have to replace a missing Joker.
Buy the mat and racks at the same time as the tiles. Playing without racks is hard, and a matching set looks better on the table.
Get the current League card before your first game, since the winning hands change every year.
Pick tiles that are easy for you to read. Clear suits and larger tiles help while you learn.
How many tiles are in an American Mahjong set?
152 playing tiles, including 8 Jokers. Most sets add 8 blank spares, for 160 tiles.
Are engraved tiles better than printed tiles?
Engraved tiles hold their artwork longer because the design is cut into the acrylic. Printed tiles cost less and still show crisp color. If you play every week, engraved is worth it.
Do these sets include racks and a mat?
The base price covers the tiles (Holiday Red also includes a carry case). On most sets you can choose a style that adds a coordinating mat, or a mat plus four racks.
What is the best American Mahjong set for beginners?
A complete 160-tile set with clear, easy-to-read tiles. Holiday Red is a good choice thanks to its larger tiles.
